That was a case of managed expectations and an appropriate budget turning in to a good thing. If Princess and the Frog had Tangled or Frozens budget it would have flopped, despite it's quality. Disney released Princess and the Frog with horrible marketing and at the same time as Avatar came out and it still made a gross of 260m.however it was a financial success because it's budget was only 100m and it had the Disney label which brought in viewers regardless. The Lone Ranger could have just been a shanghai noon remake and made 200m just because of name recognition of lone ranger, disney, and johnny depp. Then you dump the marketing cost on top of it and the deal is sealed. It's final gross was 260m - so despite targeting the same audience shanghai noon did, it earned over twice as much.however shanghai noon made double it's cost, while Lone Ranger made it's cost. Lone Ranger had a fine script for a western aimed towards families. It would be safe to say that your numbers are actually reversed, today close to 95% of films are mastered in 4K, except really effect heavy ones and animated films. Actually the first 4K DCP that I recieved in my projection booth was The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo back in 2011. Recent films i 4K are Spectre, Sicario, Bridge of Spies. Interstellar have a 4K DCP, so does Dark Knight and Rises. The Force Awakens which have one scene shot on 70mm will be the first movie (the birds say) that will open up to 1.44:1 in IMAX Laser.

Like you mentioned they are now gearing up to produce full movies using the Alexa 65 shooting in 1.44:1 and projected in that format. The image quality is astounding with much deeper blacks and whiter whites than 70mm, and you only loose a tiny bit of resolution using dual 4K projectors. IMAX have always wanted to fill that entire huge 1.44:1 screen that 'Original' IMAXes still has, which simply have not been possible because of the Xenon bulbs in todays projectors just aren't bright enough (and they use two projectors still).īut with IMAX Laser it is possible to once again fill these gigantic screens with images (digital ones) using two 4K-projectors lit by lasers. Liemax theaters today show films that have been upconverted using IMAX DMR which essentially opens up the aspect ratio to 1.90:1 and remasters the sound. 'Original' IMAX 70mm has a ratio of 1.44:1, which up until now only have been possible to shoot and project using 70mm film, have in the last few years been replaced by "Liemax" movies and theaters. There's a lot of confusion about IMAX capture and delivery formats but I think that you explained it nicely.
